Doha, Qatar, October 15, 2017, The Jassim and Hamad bin Jassim Charitable Foundation and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees signed today an agreement aimed at providing emergency health care to Yemeni refugees in Somalia.
He signed the agreement, Mr. Saeed Mudhakir Al-Hajri, Member of the Board of Directors and CEO of the Jassim and Hamad bin Jassim Charitable Foundation, in what he signed on behalf of the High Commission, Mr. Khaled Khalifa, Regional Representative of UNHCR to the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and Executive Director.
The agreement includes a grant from the Jassim and Hamad bin Jassim Charitable Foundation amounting to 250 thousand US dollars. Benefiting more than 2,000 Yemeni refugees in Somalia, This is done by providing secondary health care to them during the current year. The project targets people suffering from chronic diseases and those in need of psychological support.
Saeed Al-Hajri praised, Member of the Board of Directors, The CEO of the Foundation, in cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, said: “This agreement stems from our complete belief in the Jassim and Hamad bin Jassim Charitable Foundation in the importance of providing health care to every person in need. Through this cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, we seek to provide a better life for refugees that preserves their dignity.”
from his side, The UNHCR Regional Representative stressed the importance of this support, saying: “We are grateful for the generous donation made by the Jassim and Hamad bin Jassim Charitable Foundation for the benefit of Yemeni refugees in Somalia. Because of his urgent need. We are confident that this project will make a difference in the lives of these refugees and provide them with a better, healthier life.”
It is worth noting that there are about 5,500 Yemeni refugees who have fled to Somalia since the outbreak of the conflict in Yemen in 2015. Most of them arrive by boat. Most Yemeni refugees in Somalia are concentrated in the regions of Puntland and Somaliland. While some seek refuge in Mogadishu.
